From the recording Everything Goes
Everything Goes is an explosive indie-rock song about finding meaning and hope in the relentlessness of change and the inevitability of death. It asks the value of identity in the cosmic recycling of matter and the possibility of freedom and legacy within the confines of our sociological context.
It was largely recorded live off the floor; in order to capture its dynamic energy, in Toronto, by Mike Legere. The verses are in 7/4 and the production takes inspiration from Wintersleep, Big Thief, and Broken Social Scene.
Lyrics
To see it then, oh
But that’s how things go
We’re creatures of timing and our brains latch on long after the fire is out
Everything changes
It all rearranges
The essence of everything must go
Off to a new start
Defending a new heart
To feel the breeze as a marigold
Born of a lightshow
Condemned to the dark though
Where everything goes
With lifetimes within us
Transforming lost waves
Until everything glows
In untidy rows everyone goes
Freed in the chaos to the soundless snow
If you call that free
A chance to die hungry
A babe in the arms of the cold
With the howling wolves in tow
Everyone changes
We’re all rearrangements
The essence of everything must go
All that you gathered
Make sure that you scatter it
And hope that something new can grow
But it’s not for you to know
Born of a lightshow
Condemned to the dark though
Where everything goes
With lifetimes within us
Transforming lost waves
Until everything glows
